Today in Rip Payne

Today in 1946, Rip Payne had an easy day at the office.  He photographed three kittens hanging out together.

On this same day forty years later, IBM released their first laptop.  At which point the cats switched careers, and began to enjoy notoriety as rulers of the greater internet world.

Okay, maybe not… Here’s an interesting tidbit for you, though:

In his files, Rip Payne almost always organized photographs in a single sleeve with a given subject name.  Without fail, about every 50 sets, we come across a random (series of) cat picture(s) stuck in with something that it absolutely does not fit with.  For example, just this past week a volunteer discovered two cat pictures arbitrarily stuck in with a series on the Robert E. Lee School’s Christmas Program (undated).  I guess Rip Payne really enjoyed cats, even before their internet fame.
